Arctic Convoys Memorial

On Saturday 22nd August 2009 a new memorial to honour all who sailed from Scapa Flow on the Arctic Convoys 1941-1945 was unveiled and dedicated at Lyness.

After an introduction by the Lord-Lieutenant of Orkney, Dr Tony Trickett and welcome speeches by James Stockan, Vice-Convener OIC and Vasily Sondykov, Chairman of Ugra Duma, the three unveiled the new memorial together. The memorial was dedicated and blessed by Rev David Dawson, Royal Navy Chaplain.

The ceremony was attended by relatives of some of the five Orcadians who died serving on the Arctic Convoys, also by several surviving veterans. Medals were presented by Sergey Krutikov, Russian Consul General in Scotland to two Orcadian veterans, Mr Francis Cusiter and Dr Derek Johnstone.

The memorial was funded jointly by OIC and business interests in the Russian Province of Ugra and includes dedications in English and Russian.
