Unknown New Zealand Soldier Burial

John Sutherland travelled from Ieper on 16th February to attend, on behalf of the Royal British Legion, the burial of the body of an unknown New Zealand soldier in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery. It is just west of the village of Longueval, in the heart of the 1916 Somme Battlefield and contains the memorial to the 1,200 New Zealand soldiers who died in the Battles of the Somme in 1916 and who have no known grave. They include two Orcadians, James Burgess of Kirkwall and John Spence of Harray, while two Orcadians, John Harcus of Westray and James Harvey of Stromness, have graves in the cemetery (photos are on the website). The service was attended by the New Zealand Ambassador and the Defence Attaché to France, also the CO of 3rd Auckland and Northland Battalion Group (soldier has been identified as of the Auckland Regiment) and a retired Senior Lecturer of the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.
