Vanguard Anniversary Commemoration 2014

As it was back in 1917, 9th July this year was a fine summer's day in Orkney. It was therefore a pleasant trip across to Lyness last Wednesday for representatives of the Kirkwall and Stromness Branches of the Royal British Legion and Orkney Branch of the Royal Naval Associaion. They did so to pay respects at the Vanguard Memorial in Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery to the 843 crew members of the St Vincent Class battleship who died when she was destroyed by a quick series of explosions in the late evening of 9th July 1917. Only two men aboard the battleship survived their burns when blown off the ship into the sea, while a boat party just leaving a concert on board HMS Gourko to return to HMS Vanguard watched in horror as their ship and home disappeared in a great plume of black smoke.
