Vanguard Memorial Service 2013

Last Tuesday, 9th July, small contingents from the Kirkwall and Stromness Royal British Legion Branches and the Orkney Branch of the Royal Naval Association travelled to Lyness to commemorate the loss of the battleship HMS Vanguard on that date in 1917 and the deaths of 843 of her crew. A short Service of Remembrance was conducted by Jean Gillespie, a Reader and also a Service Veteran. Wreaths were laid at the Vanguard Memorial and Bryan Taylor, President of Kirkwall Royal British Legion Branch, said the appropriate words from Binyon's "For the Fallen".
